So, I got my drivers front wheel bearing replaced and it looks like the shop damaged my brake caliper, only cosmetically. I pointed it out to them, but they said they use padded equipment, blah blah blah. BUT! As a claims adjuster who cut his teeth on Garage Liability claims, I take about 100 photos of my car before I hand it over to anyone. So that problem was solved pretty quickly.
The question I have is, they said they can respray it. Am I out of line for asking for the whole caliper to be replaced? I am sure I could force them into it, but I don’t really want to burn my chances of going back to this shop.
This is the first time I’ve gone, but my dad uses them for his Mustang GT and they do good work.
What say you Oppo?
UPDATE
I took it back today and they called me to say they “fixed it”. I went back and they did a horrible job. Like, almost like they don’t care about me or my car.
They seem to have given my brake caliper
Tinea versicolor.
They just dabbed on some random red paint. I tried to power wash it off, but no go. I’ll just have them cut me a cheque for an amount I have not calculated yet.
It makes me sad. I really, really take car of this car.

If you make them eat the cost of a new caliper, I wouldn’t go back. Just too much of an opportunity for them to potentially do something out of spite that you’re not gonna notice but will cost you bigly later on.
I’d hope not, but risk assessment likely says it’s probably not worth the chance.
If you think you can live with a respray, maybe let them have at it with the understanding that if it doesn’t match or you’re not satisfied they’ll then replace it. Or, if they REALLY want to earn your business, see if they’ll powder coat all 4 of them for you so it’s never an issue again.
If you need a great shop, Werners Auto Klinik in Delta is great. I can highly recommend. Milo’s in Vancouver is great too, but you’ll pay for it.

It’s a scratch on some cast steel piece, repaint seems okay to me.

Having them replace it seems a bit excessive. As long as their paint matching is good enough, I imagine I’d be happy with that.

I’ve used them a few times. Really great shop to work with. Werner himself, the techs, and the office staff are all really super.
Also, after the first service, if they like you, they have complementary loaners.
They even offered to lend me the special tools to do the timing on my e38 and I hadn't even used them for service before at that point. Just really great folks.

Not only is making them eat the cost/replace the caliper probably inviting more conflict than it’s probably worth (a la Haadkoe’s remarks) , but the complications from having the system open, breaking/remaking all the connections involved, etc. etc. could be inviting if not gremlins then dissimilar aging of the two sides down the line, right?
It being a brake caliper, I guess it’s some type of caliper paint and not something tricky like powdercoat, so I would think spray would be okay.
Plus, it’s not like you don’t have some cosmetic issues appearing on the caliper bracket from normal wear and tear on the clip interfaces.

If it’s been powder coated I’d be a little upset as it’s not easy to damage, and costly to fix. Otherwise if it’s paint, get out your can and fix it. Paint isn’t a big deal.

I don’t think the paint damage justifies anything more than a repaint.
But it bothers me how they tried to deny responsibility.

Respray is fine. I agree with other comments: you can open all the cans of worms by fucking around with all dem brake systems unnecessarily.
OR
You could ask for a credit towards a replacement in the future, when you need a brake job anyway.

Just get some touch up caliper paint and brush it on, don’t pull the caliper off, not worth the hassle. It’s a brake caliper, and not a fancy brembo or something like that, just a cast one. Touch up should be just fine. Not worth the hassle IMO.

This feels slightly deminimus. I would ask them to compensate you for a rattle can (of your choosing and doing so you feel better about it) and also a reasonable $50? $35? amount off of a future service.
You can go after a caliper but you’ll end up making an enemy when you could maybe make a friend/relationship.

Just scrap them and get some fixed piston calipers. Brake caliper paint should be discolored from your use of them in spirited driving and track days.
Also I
noticed
some rust on your brake rotors.

Sure, there is some wear, it’s got 100K kms on it. However, damage is damage. I take a fair approach to it, but they will pay me. I can guarantee that.
I badger people for money as a living, I can squeeze $150 bucks out of a repair shop.

well... they made that decision easy for you. F it up, F up the fix, walk away and ask for as much money as you can get and never, ever, go there again.

just go get a can of red caliper spray paint you could fix it yourself in 15min. Sure your may get the money but you’re wasting time. You can’t get anyone to give you your time back.

So you’re going to use non original parts on your car? That could decline the value more then a paint chip on a caliper .

Oh the car is modified . Not cosmetically though.
I will purchase the same red part from Ford. It will be the same part and color

You should do both side then you don’t want them to be uneven, the piston on the other side will be more worn. The new red from ford might not match the other side too.
